Artist Talk

Dr Larne Abse Gogarty

Has Post Internet (media) gone too far within the art community

Dr Larne Abse Goraty (slade school of fine art, university college London) was the lecturer today (09/10/19), within this artist lecture Dr Larne talked about post media and its issues within the art world. Are some artists view of art to close minded in the sense of culture and community. Ld50 is an independent gallery based in London, which has had many petitions to shut the gallery down due to exhibitions on white supremacy, and its ideals as trump won the election.

71822666, was the name the gallery gave the exhibition tying the art within the thread of trumps hopeful winning of the election. This exhibit included a video shot by the mass shooter Elliot Rodgers. LD50’s staff referred to tweeters (twitter users) as this generations “new artists”. The instillation was covered in candles and crystals, acrylic plaques with tweets printed on them, memes, robot like statues. This installation also included white supremacist videos covering genocide and mesonic symbols.

The berlin Benile 9 is another gallery that uses these post media aspects within their installations and exhibitions. Works within the gallery include that of Timui si-qin, a reflected landscape. His work includes a landscape made from sand and plaster then littered with trash and graffiti, a screen displaying the new piece logo when the screen is not displaying the current viewer. The viewer attempts to read his work as a manmade misuse of nature, but also making nature seem protected. A lone coca cola bottle is placed within the small piece of litter within a bundle of fake office plants. His exhibition displays ideas of futurism and past due to the image convention.

Another area that post media covers would be contemporary music and how fashion responds within the same post internet examples.

Vetements S/S 2016, A/W 2016, A/W 2017 references to nationalism with unnecessary swearwords, the words genetically modified are also printed onto the back of many of there items including long puffer coats meant for the winter season. The term genetically modified is hinting that we are all the same with no differentiation, creating by the government or a higher being to be how they wanted and designed us, how we all fall under the same authority, strengthening there neo Nazi campaigns.

Post internet aesthetics (mediation and irrationality). Comedian Eric wareheim uses a brand of pizza rolls called titinos is described as a dedicated lifestyle coming off as disgusting and grotesque but somewhat enjoyable, including topics of blanc restaurants and tiny feminine bags.

Dyan trecartin and lizzie fitch, mark trade, 2016 http://vimeo.com/200799829 displays an argument/ quest that they venture on which you never end up understanding, mentions of family and cousins but not actually wanting them there. Over drinking and mass eating of unhealthy junk.

All of these and many others are displays of neo nazi-ish, white supremacist and post media which Dr Larne talked about during our artist lecture. Through her PowerPoint display and talks about each peace I came to the understanding that many people display what they feel within art which could be unacceptable to others. Art is something not only visual but also vocal within the population of 7 billion each culture has a different display and meaning of which art they feel is acceptable.

Jade Montserrat

Jade Montserrat and the rainbow tribe [Black lives matter]

Josephine Baker and the rainbow tribe.

Jade Montserrat is a UK based research led artist and writer; she is also a performance artist who works with the human body showing how the body is a work of art but also vulnerable. Her project is a combination of practical and critical practice following the role of Josephine Bakers rainbow tribe.

12 ethnically diverse children were adopted as an experiment to show how mixed race can live and work as a family, people viewed her work as an orphanage where she shows her family as the rainbow tribe. How families can transcend race.

Josephine baker 1906-1975 musical and performance genius, internationally acclaimed music star.

Jade Montserrat began to discuss Josephine baker due to a paper she presented in university. Her interest in her as a black celebrity and the ways race, gender, class, mass identity and celebrity culture can intersect. How a balance between her body and persona. She manipulates her body to show an unapologetic quest she is on for equality and freedom.

Jade Montserrat works with art and activism displaying her thoughts through drawing, painting, performance, installation, sculpture, film, print and text. She aims to expose gaps in our visual and linguistic habits.

She works mainly on large scale written pieces with quotes that reflect back on her black history. Mainly naked when she created these pieces to display a sense of freedom as she creates her large scale charcoal pieces. From this artist talk I have come to learn that art can be displayed and made in many ways, depending on how comfortable an artist is in their own skin.

Daniel Hauser & Marie Antoinette Chiarenza

Daniel Hauser and Marie Antoinette Chiarenza

Marie Antoinette (1957 Tunis) and Daniel Hauser (1959 Bern) are working as a team since 1983. They refer to people who are involved in artworks or maybe just in the process. They became known due to statements such as ‘thinking alone is criminal’, ‘getting paid for doing nothing’ etc. one of the most recent group pieces is the devils contract, which is a 15-minute video discussing ‘the encyclopaedia of witchcraft and demonology’.

As the lecture progressed David Hauser began to talk about his school that he currently runs offering us its history and chances to visit. F+F art school in Zurich Germany (run by David Hauser) means shape and colour, the school was shut down due to political and critical reasons. F+F rose back in the 1970’s, where it has now become a private school. Doris Stauffer left F+F in 1980’s as she didn’t agree with the teaching. She began her strike which she kept going until she died 2 years ago, she ran her own branch of the school where any woman could attend and began teaching witchcraft.

From this lecture I gathered a sense of history and development not only from the artworks discussed by Marie Antoinette but also from the school and company they (Marie Antoinette and David Hauser) both run, from here they began to discuss the ideal of joining there school in the future.

Bedwyr Williams

Bedwyr Williams currently lives outside of Caernarfon in North Wales, who is an artist in residence at next year’s Venice Biennale. Within wales he lives with his father now no longer having a studio and working from home. In 2003 he set up the Blaenau Vista Social club in the back of a caravan.

His artwork is a mixture of performance and video. He makes 3D renditions of places such as the roman baths and controversial buildings around the world. To create these 3d models he outsources designers and works with them to make his ideas come to life.

Williams work merges art and life with the slight addition of a comedic twist that becomes sympathetic and relational.

William’s is interested in the friction between the serious and banal aspects of modern life. He often deliberately refrains from over- explaining his work, preferring to let the work speak for itself and the audience to work from interpretation.

From today’s lecture I have discovered various ways and styles that animation, drawings and performance art can be made and displayed.

Arianne Churchman

Arianne Churchman is a British folk traditionalist who displays her work throughout a wide range of performance, film, sound and sculpture. When studying within reading university she was a serious painter but since then she has begun to reimagine and create her ideas within performance, working from her ideals. Mainly recreating rituals and beliefs within modern day.

From her most recent exhibit titled ‘Horse Play’ she took her inspiration from the characteristics of Hopper Joe and the Minehead Hobby horse procession, in the original play Hopper joe is a farm labourer whose role is to collect money from the audience. The character Hopper Joe is often referred to as a “ragbag” which perceives him as a cluster of materials and ideas.

Annie Churchman’s ‘Horse Play’ takes Hopper Joe’s ‘ragbag’ characteristics and costumes within the original story and replicates his character within her own ideals and creates her own performance.

From today’s lecture I discovered that there is a wide range of performances that take place and can be create from a variety of materials to display within an exhibition and outside within the public’s view.

Rachel Garfield

Working with disjunctions of narrative Rachel Garfield aims to explore the idea of incoherent subject and the formation of subjectivity. Garfield works with the concerns of Avant Garde in a video- based fine art form.

Rachel Garfield graduated art school in 1985, from here she’s been a painter for 20 years working with her Jewish backgrounds and beliefs, displaying racist views of others in her paintings. From her paintings she didn’t know where to go next, so she began looking into Ali G, from here she found that he was Jewish, and had similar beliefs to herself. Having been a child suffering from others racist views on her and her family she was inspired to make a difference with her work “What defines being English”, is being part of this country only available to those who were born here or do their parents have to be from here as well.

‘So, you think you can tell’ is one of Rachel Garfield’s first video- based fine art pieces, displayed within a gallery in Manchester. Her video displays what people view and speculate of others, and how they should be. How religion and culture differ peoples opinions of each other.

With one of her long time friends she made a movie about her and her friends racism stories, telling the truth about what happened to them on a daily basis in many different ways.

From today’s artist talk I have discovered that Rachel Garfield is a video based artist which she developed from being a painter.

Hamishi Farah

Hamishi Farah born 1991, he is a Somali artist born in the Australian administration, he works with painting and other forms of media. As he was denied entry into America and jailed, he returned back to Australia. Upon return to Australia he retired from Australian art, citing institutional racism, empty virtue etc. due to his new work he was then exiled from both Australia and the united states. However, he currently resides in Auckland, New Zealand.

Artworks such as the dog fountain, from his works of Dog Heaven, are dedicated towards a ship known as the sea venture owned by the Virginia company. The water that is inside the dog fountain artwork is from the international waters surrounding Australia, 200 nautical miles where the waters are law less. The dog that appears from within the piece is a symbol of the fall of colonisation.

During the time that Farah made this piece, he was struggling with the aspect of painting. So he used this sculpted piece as the centerpiece within his exhibition.

Karen Kramer

Karen graduated with a BFA from Parsons School of Design, New York in 2003 working in graphic design. In 2013 she completed the MFA Fine Art at Goldsmiths, university of London.

Karen Kramer has had exhibitions internationally and selected screenings. Exhibitions such as; Czech Galleries, Prague, 2014, San Francisco, 2014: Arti et Amicitiae etc.

Throughout the talk she showed us series of videos that she had made, one was about the origin of a balloon, she began by showing a mickey mouse balloon, then moving on to what she thought its future would be, with the overlay of an automated alien voice, she added subtitles to explain her ideas.

From here she showed us more of her work, her style and ideas showed me the different styles and ways to create videography, so it may be something I begin to explore in the future, around some of my own ideas.

Karen Sandhu

Sandhu is a poet and a book artist, currently completing her PhD at the Royal Holloway where she was awarded a college studentship. Throughout the lecture she showed us some of the collaborations she’s done, one of which was the institute of contemporary Arts and performed at Camden peoples theatre.

She showed us some of her research and interests which included artist books and visual arts, philosophy and art, curation of art and poetry etc.

She began to show us some of her work including object-based art-highlighting the dangers of allergies. Her work is performative, and it also shows support to the themes of allergies etc. the paper books include physical reactions to allergies such as pollen, nuts etc.

When she was speaking of topics, she felt serious about she was quite robotic and straight faced, attempting to get her point across clearly, however she was very informative.

Summer assessment 2019

Artwork Preparation for first university exhibition

Throughout the summer of 2019, we were given the task of completing a piece of work to display within the studio for our first exhibition. For this piece we could make anything, as long as it was created Over the summer and now a past piece of work.

For this I decided to work with a material I hadn’t before, so I decided to work in coloured pencil, using Prisma colours.

I was in a bit of an art slump over the summer and had no motivation when it came to completing work. However, during the summer I went on holiday to South Korea with a friend, from here I found my inspiration once more. The piece I created was from a picture I took during a concert. From this concert I was hit with inspiration and decided to draw Jung Wheein, a member of Mamamoo (who performed during the concert) I decided to create a realistic piece but change the colour tones, using both warm and cold tones but with drastic vibrancy.

The piece tends to convey a variety of emotions, with her looking to the bottom left corner, and her amber ish eyes there is a sense of sadness, this is helped by the colour scheme. The majority of the piece is made of cold blue tones, however on the left side of her face and down the centre of the page there are warm colour tones, yellow is a warm colour that contrast greatly with blue but also gives the feeling of a cold tone.

In the future when it comes to starting my independent project, I plan on continuing to use coloured pencils to create my work as it is a medium, I haven’t used before that I want to explore more.

Tutorial Reports

Tutorial 1: Lisa 14/10/19

Give an account of what has been discussed during the tutorial with reference to your independent studio project (100 words): Within my independent studio project, I plan on creating a large piece of art based on wild mammals you tend to find in England, such as foxes and rabbits etc. from here I want to draw and paint mammals in a multitude of medium to express modern day art and animals, I like the idea of painting mammals due to the fact that places within England are slowly loosing there wildlife therefore loosing there animals, from this I want to give certain species a place within my work without the fear of them disappearing.

Give an account of the advice and suggestions given by the tutor (100 words): Throughout this tutorial the advice I was given was to research a few more artists who area painting in a similar style and for the same idea. I was also told to experiment in a range of medium, expanding my skill level.

Give an account of what you decided to do in response to the tutorial (100 words):In response to the tutorial I am looking to create a large-scale piece, with a collection of paintings and drawings along a scroll of paper in the hopes of creating a story and a flowing piece of art within, creating a still animation of English wildlife.

Give an account of what you manage to do in response to the tutorial (100 words): In response to the tutorial I have managed to begin drawing a series of animals and experimenting with gouache for the first time to try and find a style that suits me before I begin to work on such a large scale.

Tutorial 2: Julie

Give an account of what has been discussed during the tutorial with reference to your independent studio project (100 words):  As I’ve been working on my independent project, I had a discussion with Julie about what my work is attempting to display. I wanted to show the difference between animals that live in the rural areas of the UK and those that have now become more urban. As I was only producing pencil drawings in A2 on black paper, you couldn’t really tell what my work was attempting to display. Within this discussion Julie said she liked the way I drew the animals front facing to attract the viewer and get them lost within the pieces.

Give an account of the advice and suggestions given by the tutor (100 words): Throughout this tutorial the advice I was given was to experiment more with the idea of urban-ism and urban animals. I should research artists who display similar views as me and also work with the idea of photography as the background.

Give an account of what you decided to do in response to the tutorial (100 words): In response to the tutorial i have found 2 artists (who are both painters); David Ambarzumjan and Kevin Peterson. Also, in response to this tutorial within my work I added a car behind the fox with a light coating of paint over the black paper to show a snippet of urban-ism. However, I feel to move on with my work I may start working with photography and photographic backgrounds for my pencil drawings.

Give an account of what you manage to do in response to the tutorial (100 words): In response to the tutorial I have managed to produce my 3 pieces for the exhibition and have them displayed in a vertical formation; from this I have produced a few smaller sketches/ pieces to see how I can move forward with my work.

Tutorial 4: Julie

Give an account of what has been discussed during the tutorial with reference to your independent studio project (100 words): During the tutorial I had a discussion with Julie about my independent project, as I’m drawing around the themes of urbanism and the destruction of habitats revolving around endangered animals. I was working on an acrylic painting of a Sumatran tiger, my original plan was to go through the top 20 list of endangered animals and begin a series of paintings.

Give an account of the advice and suggestions given by the tutor (100 words): However, from this list of 20 animals Julie and I had a discussion on how I could bring in more urbanisation as I wasn’t really getting my point across with the idea of habitual destruction due to the impacts of humans. Julie recommended 4 artists, David Abram, Charles Foster, Robert Macfarlane and Paul Farley. I was given the suggestion to read through a few of there books revolving around animal species.

Give an account of what you decided to do in response to the tutorial (100 words): In response to the tutorial I decided to do more concept and animal sketches within my sketchbook, exploring colour themes and layered urbanism within my hopeful future paintings.

Give an account of what you manage to do in response to the tutorial (100 words): In response to this tutorial I managed to draw 6 a3 pages of quick paintings and I have came up with a plan on what my summative piece looks like, so I’m going to continue to explore those ideas for the next few weeks

Tutorial 6: Julie

Give an account of what has been discussed during the tutorial with reference to your independent studio project (100 words): During this tutorial I had completed my final piece and was ready to display it for the exhibition. I began this tutorial by showing Julie my piece, and we discussed how I could continue with this style and theme onto next term.

Give an account of the advice and suggestions given by the tutor (100 words): Julie and I discussed how I could take my ideas further, by further researching my ideas, and seeing what other animals are taking over cities, and how I can make my ideas cultural as well as environmental.

Give an account of what you decided to do in response to the tutorial (100 words): In response to the tutorial I have decided to look into more articles, those that are more recent as well and research what other animals are coming into urban areas, where they don’t usually belong. I was also recommended to read ‘The call of the wild’ by Jack London, and I have since downloaded the pdf to read.

Give an account of what you manage to do in response to the tutorial (100 words): In response to the tutorial I have been able to find a few more articles displaying the ideas of urban beasts, and I plan on taking some research from such articles and seeing what animals and cities they affect.

Studio One

Practicals

Practical 1/2

500 bamboo sticks and 600 cable ties filed a large white walled room, previously the room was barren with only 4 white pillars to hold the ceiling, natural lighting filtering through the door. Once the maze of bamboo was constructed there was only one way in and one way out, a wooden tunnel of geometric shapes confusing the viewers perspective. Some bamboo appears closer than it may seem whilst the structural but cluttered aspect makes the once bare room seem bigger, with all lights but one off the room holds a darker more mysterious aspect that entices the viewer making them want to proceed through the mazed journey.

Practical 3

The cares of a family man – Franz Kafka

Reading from the extract of Franz Kafka’s short story we came to learn about a creature called Odradek. From this discovery there was a discussion about his depressive bouts (Franz Kafka’s) and his anxiety from his father causing him to unravel. For out small exhibition project I collected a large role of fabric and tied it across two beams. Adding miscellaneous items such a string, leaves, sticks, rocks, paper and a leaf made into the star of David (Jewish star). With these additions to the fabric it was meant to display a disorganised timeline showing the writers life and struggle throughout his work of fiction until his passing.

Practical 4

During practical 3 to prepare for the session I took photographs of my walk to art and printed them off in A3 in colour. From these images I cut out 10 circles and swapped the circles with those of another image to create a sense of depth a differentiation within the pictures.

Within the session I was given a task to collect a series of materials to create a stack as an artwork. Me and my partner collected items such as a chair, bricks, old tile etc. piling them on top of each other. From this we took pictures and printed them off, and then rearranged them to get the work I currently have.

Practical 5/6

Within this practical we had discussions on what makes an exhibition and how to exhibit a wide variety of work within one area. From here we blew up around 200 balloons as a class and piled them up in the corner using chairs as a wall to keep them all in an enclosed space.

Practical 7

During this practical we learnt about the ideas surrounding solar punk. Solar punk is a movement in speculative fiction, art, fashion and activism that seeks to answer and embody the question “what does a sustainable civilization look like, and how can we get there?

Throughout this session David read an extract from a solar punk book, and we had a discussion on the ideas surrounding such themes. From here we were given the option to work separately or in groups, to create a machine or world where the ideas of solar punk are in place. From this me and my group created a world called Passome, this idealistic world consisted of a collecting energy from a variety of renewable sources, such as wind and hydroelectric. We put a lot of thought into how people act within the city however, even though we searched for an idealistic world, there will always be people who act outside of the law. From this theme, we looked into renewable energy ideas and decided to use treadmills as a form of punishment, even though this may sound harsh, treadmills were originally used to grind grains. So, we took this idea and modernized it.

Towards the end of the session we had a group crit, from here I feel like I may explore the ideas of solar punk in the future, and the session was helpful, as I wouldn’t have ever looked into the themes of solar punk myself.

Practical 8

Throughout this practical we explored the ideas of digital art, we began by looking at artworks, websites, book recommendations etc. From here we were given the task to complete a … with the images and screenshots we printed before coming to the practical. During the afternoon session of the practical we had to complete a digital form of art, for this I chose to do a digital drawing of a tiger, using similar ideas from my independent project. Due to having under an hour to complete the piece I only had a rough sketch with some colour samples completed, however you could still tell what it was.

Throughout the crit however, I didn’t find it helpful. There were a lot of unnecessary comments made about my piece, even though it was still a digital artwork and all of the class could tell what it was, even from a distance.

Practical 9

For this practical we worked with the ideas of material objects within and out the body. To start the session if we all stood in a big group, from here we worked our way through a large stack of printer paper, folding it in as many ways possible, some of those including origami hats, origami trees, chatter boxes etc.

The session moved on and we worked with an orange, letting it take us around the room by completing tasks, such as rolling the orange, throwing it etc. We worked with objects that were not there also, choosing an empty bottle of alcohol, we had to create a gesture and people Had to copy such gesture and then draw it.

From this lecture I learnt that art doesn’t have to always be drawn, that it can also be object and performance based.

Practical 10

In this practical we worked with and created Zines and e-zines. However, I wasn’t able to make it to the practical due to having the flu, so I spent some time later on creating my own Zine. A Zine is s an independently published booklet, often by a single person. They used to be created by physically cutting and gluing text and images together onto a master flat for photocopying. I created a zine using some pictures I took in Korea and recreated them with paint pens, labeling each place.

Zines are something I may further explore as they are easy to create, and reproduce in mass production.
