Tutorial 1: Lisa 14/10/19

Give an account of what has been discussed during the tutorial with reference to your independent studio project (100 words): Within my independent studio project, I plan on creating a large piece of art based on wild mammals you tend to find in England, such as foxes and rabbits etc. from here I want to draw and paint mammals in a multitude of medium to express modern day art and animals, I like the idea of painting mammals due to the fact that places within England are slowly loosing there wildlife therefore loosing there animals, from this I want to give certain species a place within my work without the fear of them disappearing.

Give an account of the advice and suggestions given by the tutor (100 words): Throughout this tutorial the advice I was given was to research a few more artists who area painting in a similar style and for the same idea. I was also told to experiment in a range of medium, expanding my skill level.

Give an account of what you decided to do in response to the tutorial (100 words):In response to the tutorial I am looking to create a large-scale piece, with a collection of paintings and drawings along a scroll of paper in the hopes of creating a story and a flowing piece of art within, creating a still animation of English wildlife.

Give an account of what you manage to do in response to the tutorial (100 words): In response to the tutorial I have managed to begin drawing a series of animals and experimenting with gouache for the first time to try and find a style that suits me before I begin to work on such a large scale.

Tutorial 2: Julie

Give an account of what has been discussed during the tutorial with reference to your independent studio project (100 words):  As I’ve been working on my independent project, I had a discussion with Julie about what my work is attempting to display. I wanted to show the difference between animals that live in the rural areas of the UK and those that have now become more urban. As I was only producing pencil drawings in A2 on black paper, you couldn’t really tell what my work was attempting to display. Within this discussion Julie said she liked the way I drew the animals front facing to attract the viewer and get them lost within the pieces.

Give an account of the advice and suggestions given by the tutor (100 words): Throughout this tutorial the advice I was given was to experiment more with the idea of urban-ism and urban animals. I should research artists who display similar views as me and also work with the idea of photography as the background.

Give an account of what you manage to do in response to the tutorial (100 words): In response to the tutorial I have managed to produce my 3 pieces for the exhibition and have them displayed in a vertical formation; from this I have produced a few smaller sketches/ pieces to see how I can move forward with my work.

Tutorial 4: Julie

Give an account of what has been discussed during the tutorial with reference to your independent studio project (100 words): During the tutorial I had a discussion with Julie about my independent project, as I’m drawing around the themes of urbanism and the destruction of habitats revolving around endangered animals. I was working on an acrylic painting of a Sumatran tiger, my original plan was to go through the top 20 list of endangered animals and begin a series of paintings.

Give an account of the advice and suggestions given by the tutor (100 words): However, from this list of 20 animals Julie and I had a discussion on how I could bring in more urbanisation as I wasn’t really getting my point across with the idea of habitual destruction due to the impacts of humans. Julie recommended 4 artists, David Abram, Charles Foster, Robert Macfarlane and Paul Farley. I was given the suggestion to read through a few of there books revolving around animal species.

Give an account of what you decided to do in response to the tutorial (100 words): In response to the tutorial I decided to do more concept and animal sketches within my sketchbook, exploring colour themes and layered urbanism within my hopeful future paintings.

Give an account of what you manage to do in response to the tutorial (100 words): In response to this tutorial I managed to draw 6 a3 pages of quick paintings and I have came up with a plan on what my summative piece looks like, so I’m going to continue to explore those ideas for the next few weeks

Tutorial 6: Julie

Give an account of what has been discussed during the tutorial with reference to your independent studio project (100 words): During this tutorial I had completed my final piece and was ready to display it for the exhibition. I began this tutorial by showing Julie my piece, and we discussed how I could continue with this style and theme onto next term.

Give an account of the advice and suggestions given by the tutor (100 words): Julie and I discussed how I could take my ideas further, by further researching my ideas, and seeing what other animals are taking over cities, and how I can make my ideas cultural as well as environmental.

Give an account of what you decided to do in response to the tutorial (100 words): In response to the tutorial I have decided to look into more articles, those that are more recent as well and research what other animals are coming into urban areas, where they don’t usually belong. I was also recommended to read ‘The call of the wild’ by Jack London, and I have since downloaded the pdf to read.

Give an account of what you manage to do in response to the tutorial (100 words): In response to the tutorial I have been able to find a few more articles displaying the ideas of urban beasts, and I plan on taking some research from such articles and seeing what animals and cities they affect.
