Practical 1/2

500 bamboo sticks and 600 cable ties filed a large white walled room, previously the room was barren with only 4 white pillars to hold the ceiling, natural lighting filtering through the door. Once the maze of bamboo was constructed there was only one way in and one way out, a wooden tunnel of geometric shapes confusing the viewers perspective. Some bamboo appears closer than it may seem whilst the structural but cluttered aspect makes the once bare room seem bigger, with all lights but one off the room holds a darker more mysterious aspect that entices the viewer making them want to proceed through the mazed journey.

Practical 3

The cares of a family man – Franz Kafka

Reading from the extract of Franz Kafka’s short story we came to learn about a creature called Odradek. From this discovery there was a discussion about his depressive bouts (Franz Kafka’s) and his anxiety from his father causing him to unravel. For out small exhibition project I collected a large role of fabric and tied it across two beams. Adding miscellaneous items such a string, leaves, sticks, rocks, paper and a leaf made into the star of David (Jewish star). With these additions to the fabric it was meant to display a disorganised timeline showing the writers life and struggle throughout his work of fiction until his passing.

Practical 4

During practical 3 to prepare for the session I took photographs of my walk to art and printed them off in A3 in colour. From these images I cut out 10 circles and swapped the circles with those of another image to create a sense of depth a differentiation within the pictures.

Within the session I was given a task to collect a series of materials to create a stack as an artwork. Me and my partner collected items such as a chair, bricks, old tile etc. piling them on top of each other. From this we took pictures and printed them off, and then rearranged them to get the work I currently have.

Practical 5/6

Within this practical we had discussions on what makes an exhibition and how to exhibit a wide variety of work within one area. From here we blew up around 200 balloons as a class and piled them up in the corner using chairs as a wall to keep them all in an enclosed space.

Practical 7

During this practical we learnt about the ideas surrounding solar punk. Solar punk is a movement in speculative fiction, art, fashion and activism that seeks to answer and embody the question “what does a sustainable civilization look like, and how can we get there?

Throughout this session David read an extract from a solar punk book, and we had a discussion on the ideas surrounding such themes. From here we were given the option to work separately or in groups, to create a machine or world where the ideas of solar punk are in place. From this me and my group created a world called Passome, this idealistic world consisted of a collecting energy from a variety of renewable sources, such as wind and hydroelectric. We put a lot of thought into how people act within the city however, even though we searched for an idealistic world, there will always be people who act outside of the law. From this theme, we looked into renewable energy ideas and decided to use treadmills as a form of punishment, even though this may sound harsh, treadmills were originally used to grind grains. So, we took this idea and modernized it.

Towards the end of the session we had a group crit, from here I feel like I may explore the ideas of solar punk in the future, and the session was helpful, as I wouldn’t have ever looked into the themes of solar punk myself.

Practical 8

Throughout this practical we explored the ideas of digital art, we began by looking at artworks, websites, book recommendations etc. From here we were given the task to complete a … with the images and screenshots we printed before coming to the practical. During the afternoon session of the practical we had to complete a digital form of art, for this I chose to do a digital drawing of a tiger, using similar ideas from my independent project. Due to having under an hour to complete the piece I only had a rough sketch with some colour samples completed, however you could still tell what it was.

Throughout the crit however, I didn’t find it helpful. There were a lot of unnecessary comments made about my piece, even though it was still a digital artwork and all of the class could tell what it was, even from a distance.

Practical 9

For this practical we worked with the ideas of material objects within and out the body. To start the session if we all stood in a big group, from here we worked our way through a large stack of printer paper, folding it in as many ways possible, some of those including origami hats, origami trees, chatter boxes etc.

The session moved on and we worked with an orange, letting it take us around the room by completing tasks, such as rolling the orange, throwing it etc. We worked with objects that were not there also, choosing an empty bottle of alcohol, we had to create a gesture and people Had to copy such gesture and then draw it.

From this lecture I learnt that art doesn’t have to always be drawn, that it can also be object and performance based.

Practical 10

In this practical we worked with and created Zines and e-zines. However, I wasn’t able to make it to the practical due to having the flu, so I spent some time later on creating my own Zine. A Zine is s an independently published booklet, often by a single person. They used to be created by physically cutting and gluing text and images together onto a master flat for photocopying. I created a zine using some pictures I took in Korea and recreated them with paint pens, labeling each place.

Zines are something I may further explore as they are easy to create, and reproduce in mass production.
